Barbershop Animations:
A Community-Centered Digital Art Project

This series of digital animations was developed in collaboration with barbershop culture in North Long Beach, CA. The project featured six individual animations, each created with and inspired by a specific barber’s personality and story. These animations were presented in hyper-local and unconventional formats—screened on in-shop televisions, projected in cargo containers, and included in events that activated disused urban spaces.

One of the featured barbers, “Quick,” performed live in his shop as his personalized animation played on the TV, blurring the lines between subject and audience, storytelling and performance.

This work was created as part of the ALOT Initiative funded by the Long Beach Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. As part of the project, I rented a storefront at 6021 Atlantic Avenue for 4 years —transforming it into a working public art studio, open for community collaboration and creative exchange.
